We learn something every day!

Yes, that’s how the saying goes. We all learn something every day, whether we are aware of it or not. Last week, Mitchell sent me a link to this blog and Monday I started “flipping” through the pages. A beautiful blog about a young lady and her adventures to owning a farm and fulfilling a long time dream — quitting your job and living off the land! I am drawn to her blog because she puts on paper what I would like to do and the purpose of her blog is just this: to help future homesteaders learn from her do’s and dont’s.

In just a couple of days of being on her blog, I feel like I’ve spent so much time with her learning and seeing through her eyes what’s going on at the farm. BUT, today I stumbled upon a post she wrote and she mentions her younger sister’s visit. He sister helped with chores at a time when her husband was injured and recovering. You can read all about it here. She also mentioned that her sister travels across the world to volunteer at different farms and learn about other cultures and how they do things to become more sustainable, or just earn a living. She writes all about it here. “You can check out her blog and absorb some of her contagious enthusiasm for life and experiences.”, wrote her sister and I got hooked!

photoAnd this way I found out about WWOOF (http://www.wwoof.net/) and the ways volunteers across the world connect with hosts and learn from each other different ways of doing things. The volunteers get hands on experience and in the field learning, while helping out the host on different projects in exchange for food and board provided.

This search opened a new door of opportunities for us, thinking about how WE can also improve our operations and extend our farm with the help of volunteers. Further research on the subject took me to more websites, listed below if you’re interested in checking them out.

And if you would like to read through a couple of articles from Verge Magazine and The Guardian.

And today you learned something new too 🙂

  1. Its amazing how much we can learn nowadays. Any day we don’t learn to me is a wasted day. Great story. Its awesome how ‘little things’ others do, often spawn amazing effects/actions in others. Nice share.

Hey, that’s cool! I’m Khaiti’s younger sister Melanie.. the volunteer freak! So cool you read my blog, and I appreciate the acknowledgment! If you want any commentary on the things volunteers do best or how to motivate them to LEARN while they work.. don’t hesitate to email me! I’v volunteered on.. like 25 different farms now? Encountered over a hundred different volunteers and certainly can help if you have any questions 🙂
Next year I’ll be doing a coalition project living with Khaiti on the farm.. now it’s time to fulfill my dream!

    • Thank you for your comment Melanie! I am so glad you stopped by 🙂 In the near future I may have some questions, as I am researching about this whole concept and maybe enroll as a host farm. I’ll keep in touch through this virtual world!
